Dear Participants,

We are presenting Anne's requirements for the participants last meeting.

Please prepare:
– introduction to your idea of the project
– a method, if possible
– Result: the way how you translated ideas into a design
– a discussion (can be several ways of possible designs)
– a conclusion (final result). 

Anne Bessemans will review yours materials, assume and help you in preparation of the publications of results came from your researches.

The last meeting is payed for gathering materials to the book and exhibition redact them consistently and elegant.

We wish your pictures and text present good academic level so please prepare your works and yourself to this final review.

You all are invited for the part of the Silesian String Quartet Festival which takes place every year in Katowice giving us opportunity to listen great music by classic and contemporary chambers music composers.

Yadzia Williams – the leader of the program in publication and illustration for children,
Glyndwr University, Wales, the co-author of the "Encyclopedia of the publication and illustration for children" will visit us during the workshop.
Yadzia Williams and Ania Machwic will give an presentation in good and bad samples of using typography in children's publication.
Durring the days of workshop they will talk individually, about your concepts of publication for children
and using text connected with illustration in children's publication.

They will introduce the project of illustrating bilingual proverbs. They realize this project as an international collaboration in publication design. The first results of concepts will be presented as a part
of international exhibition of Proverbs accompanied The International conference in Illustration,
in Glyndwr University, Wrexham on 3rd November 2011.

You are invited to participate, presenting chosen samples of your typefaces working with bilingual text of the given proverbs.

and seminar in typography and publication for children's design research.

Workshop 10-12 June

Piątek | start 12:00 w sali 211 (II piętro)
1) Dyskusja nad aktualnym stanem projektu każdego ze studentów. Prosimy uczestników o wcześniejsze wydrukowanie dokumentów testowych.
Pragniemy poprowadzić też dyskusję otwartą, w której uczestnicy na wzajem komentują swoje kroje i dzielą się własnym doświadczeniem i spostrzeżeniami.
2) Powtórka z podstaw Font Laba. Różnice pomędzy łączeniami ostrymi i smukłymi (sharp and smooth connection), edycja krzywych, dodawanie i usuwanie punktów, kopiowanie elementow itp.
3) Indywidualna praca nad krojami po dyskusji i konsultacje.

Sobota
1) Książki dla dzieci na Bliskim Wschodzie. Prezentacja i film.
2) Indywidualna praca nad krojami i konsultacje
3) Prezntacja dotycząca powtarzalnych emementów w pismach, które elementy w alfabecie są multiplikowalne do innych liter, ktore nie.
4) Indywidualna praca nad krojami i konsultacje.

Niedziela
1) Indywidualna praca nad krojami i konsultacje.
2) Prezentacja jak tworzyć dobry dokument do testowania powstającego kroju.
3) Podsumowanie i wspólna dyskusja. W jaką strone kontynułować, czego unikać, na co zwracać uwagę.

Students introduce themselves to Ann & Eben and indicate what they want to accomplish.

Eben Sorkin Utility First: This is a very short presentation on why I am teach students to emphasize utility over aesthetics, not in absolute terms but in terms of sequence. I explain how this approach saves time overall and leaves more time to consider beauty/aesthetics.

Lunch Break

Eben Sorkin Lecture: The primacy of the context and the document. This is a talk about the importance considering the context first - purpose, audience/readership, document structure, technology used to image the letters and so on. This is the first step in making a utility oriented process and is geared towards a more precise and narrow definition of the project brief.

Document Project: 
Students break into 3-4-5 groups and examine documents to recognize their structure and to characterize both their typographic needs as well as to analyze the relative success or failure of the solution. Students are asked to characterize the properties of the type used and to imagine if what properties might improve the result and why.

Ann asks the students about their ideas about what might be good for children. A record of the ideas is kept.

14:15  
Ann talks about her work and Sue Walkers work. The answers given are compared to this research to see if the ideas suggested are supported by research and to see which ones have not been addressed by research.

Eben Sorkin Lecture: Recognition is the primary function responsible for speed in reading. Recognition also has its opposite: Crowding. An explanation of what crowding is is given and the experiment I am doing is presented.

Crowding related studies are read and an informal experiment with crowding is conducted using a white or blackboard.

Ann & Eben present additional research including new Microsoft research on word and letter spacing and letter features. The goal is to make the material accessible and to let student begin to imagine what kind of research they might like to conduct and to make it clear that they can use research to improve their type design process and to focus it. Examples of common practices in type design which have an empirical character will also be discussed.

Ann & Eben will each give talks on better defining legibility and readability. These talks are designed to help foster a critical awareness of what there terms mean.

Eben Sorkin: How to set deliberate priorities in your type design process to allow the work to be more efficiently, faster, and to better control the voice or feeling produced by your design. This lecture picks up where the lecture on utility leaves off and integrates the document discussions.

A discussion on the power of using Multiple master technology to answer questions quickly and precisely is explained. Students with Fontlab may try a practical example.

An introduction to traditional optical adjustments and less discussed ones.  
A discussion of the way that recognition/crowding might interact with letter spacing and the potential that contextual shaping may have in enhancing recognition.
